Torn & Stretched Earlobe Repair

Heavy earrings, accidental pulls and gauges can split or stretch the earlobe. Earlobe repair is a quick procedure under local anaesthesia that restores a natural shape.

Who needs earlobe repair?

  • A completely torn (split) earlobe after an earring has been pulled through.
  • An elongated or "slit-like" piercing from years of heavy earrings, common with traditional jewellery.
  • Stretched lobes from gauges or plugs.
  • Keloids or cysts on the earlobe after piercing.
  • Age-related thinning and sagging of the lobe.

How the repair is done

The procedure is performed as a day-care minor operation:

  1. The ear is cleaned and numbed with a local anaesthetic injection – you stay awake and feel no pain.
  2. The scarred, skin-lined edges of the tear are trimmed so that fresh tissue can heal together.
  3. The lobe is reshaped, often with a small zig-zag (Z-plasty) or L-shaped closure, which reduces notching at the lower edge.
  4. Fine stitches are placed on the front and back of the lobe.

A single ear takes about 20–30 minutes; both ears 45–60 minutes. You can go home immediately.

Recovery

  • Keep the dressing dry for 24–48 hours, then clean gently and apply the prescribed ointment.
  • Stitches are removed after 5–7 days.
  • Avoid sleeping on the repaired side and pulling clothes over the ear for the first week.
  • Mild swelling and bruising settle within a few days.

Re-piercing

Wait at least 6–8 weeks (often up to 3 months) before re-piercing so the tissue has regained strength. The new hole should be placed slightly away from the scar line, not through it. Choosing lighter earrings or using earring back supports helps prevent another tear.

Results and risks

Most patients are very happy with the result, and the fine scar becomes barely visible over a few months. Possible issues include minor infection, a small notch at the lobe edge, or keloid formation in people prone to it – your surgeon may suggest steroid injections or silicone gel to reduce this risk.

Frequently asked questions

Is earlobe repair painful?

Only the local anaesthetic injection is felt as a brief sting. After the procedure, discomfort is mild and usually controlled with paracetamol.

Can I wear earrings right after?

No. The lobe needs 6–8 weeks or more to heal fully before re-piercing and wearing earrings again.

Can a torn earlobe heal by itself?

Once a tear has healed with skin lining the edges, it will not close on its own. A minor surgical repair is needed to join it.
